This painting depicts the moment just after Sinéad O’Connor had retaliated to the booing crowd at Madison Square Garden by screaming the lyrics from Bob Marley’s
War:
“Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war”
The figure behind Sinéad is Chris Kristofferson, who offered her support following her brave act by hugging her and whispering “Don’t let the bastards grind you down” in her ear.
I made the painting from watching and rewatching the video of this event on Youtube, shortly after her death.
