Kevin Kavanagh Gallery is pleased to present Sugar-Coated, an exhibition of new paintings by Gemma Browne.
The paintings in this show are based on female models’ faces from fashion magazines. They are titled “Sugar-Coated” because it is the outer ‘prettified’ surface that makes the first or biggest impression. The painted faces are aware of being posed and viewed but they are also wide-eyed and looking directly at the viewer. The images are second-hand, influenced by photographs but unlike the glossy magazines that seem to display female faces as consumer products the painting process adds warmth and character to the images.
Gemma Browne graduated with a National Diploma in Fine Art from Crawford College of Art in 1988 and from Birmingham Institute of Art and Design with a Masters in Fine Art in 1993. She lives and works in Dublin.
